Horse racing used to be a big part of our lives. Horse racing is traditionally the Sport of Kings and nothing quite beats the thrill of being there. Before we had Lily we were regulars at the Newmarket July course and had visited the Newmarket Rowley Mile course a few times. We used to go to the July cup every year (I even picked the winner 4 years in a row). If we ever had a free afternoon in June or July then we would always pop along to the Newmarket July course. We’ve been to Lingfield Park Racecourse a number of times too; we even sponsored a race there for Mike‘s 30th birthday. It was called the Michael Hughes 30th Birthday Stakes.
We have taken Lily to Lingfield Park a couple of times in the last two years as they have an onsite hotel. We had not taken Lily to Newmarket Racecourse yet so when the BHA got in touch and invited us to go we were really excited.
Lily was really excited for our trip. She was really looking forward to seeing all the horses. We chose to visit the Rowley Mile course on 30th September for the Cambridgeshire Meeting. We had lovely weather on the day & we picked a few winners as well!
Visiting as a family was very different to visiting the races as a couple; there is less time for reading the racing post and more time spent on toilet trips and eating snacks! Lily absolutely loved seeing the horses. She enjoyed watching them walk around in the parade ring and helping us decide which one to pick. Lily saw a horse poo in the parade ring and thought it was hysterical! She loved cheering the horses on during the race and watching the presentations after each race.
The food at the Rowley mile course is limited compared to the large selection available at the July course. Also at the Rowley Mile course the food stalls are located in the Grandstand; we tend to prefer to eat in the premier enclosure where possible. The food choices ranged from fish and chips, to burgers & sausages.
Parking is available right outside the course which makes it really convenient; especially when visiting with young children.
We made a VLOG of our trip too and hope you enjoy watching it: A Family Day At The Races.
Disclosure: We were given our tickets to Newmarket Racecourse for free in exchange for this review. All views and opinions are my own.
