Top Tips for planning a great Staycation | Happy Mummy

With ever increasing travel prices, especially over school holidays, a new trend in travel is emerging: The Staycation!  What is a staycation? A staycation can be interpreted in one of two ways;

  1. Family Travel in the UK only
  2. A Holiday where you sleep at home but plan a different and fun family day trip every day

Now you know what a Staycation is, want to know how to plan a great one?

Top Tips for planning a great Staycation:

We thought about going to away in the UK for the Easter weekend but with prices starting at double the usual cost we refused to be conned and decided to take a staycation instead! We decided we would use our home as a place to sleep, have breakfast and get dressed but then treat everyday as if we were on holiday; getting up early and doing day trips and eating out so we had no cooking and washing up!  Here are my top tips for a great Staycation:

There is no changing what the Great British Weather will throw at us so be prepared; I made a long list of over 20 possible activities for our 4 day break half of them were for nice weather, the other half were rainy weather; this way we still had a degree of choice each morning as we had lots to choose from no matter what the weather was doing!

We all know that farms, zoos and eating out can be pricey, we planned ahead and asked for specific farm, days out and meal vouchers ahead of time…on day 1 we hardly spent anything as we used a farm voucher and ate for free using a 3 course meal voucher that we got for Christmas! Next time your stuck for a gift idea ask for vouchers and save them up!

Traffic chaos is a common problem but coupled with a bank holiday it often makes journeys a nightmare; we therefore limited our days out to within a 1 hour drive of home. You will be amazed at what you can find within an hour of your home!

I live on the Herts/Essex border and I googled the following to plan our days out:

Museums Essex
Museums Hertfordshire
Zoos Essex
Zoos Hertfordshire
Farms Essex
Farms Hertfordshire
National Trust Essex
National Trust Hertfordshire
Easter Egg Hunts Essex
Easter Egg Hunts Hertfordshire

Throw in 1 wildcard that you wouldn’t usually do; for us it was a farm as the first one we ever went to was very overpriced and didn’t have a lot there, but this time we chose Willows Activity Farm and had an absolutely amazing day out, so don’t be afraid to expand your horizons!

There are some good tips here lovely, and sometimes you can have a really good holiday in the UK. There is so much to do here, and it’s often easier than going abroad. If the weather is good, it can be glorious. Planning is key and having a bit of a agenda really helps, as it’s not just spend the day at the beach or by the pool. Vouchers are brilliant way to save money, as often attractions really add up when there’s a lot of you. Thanks so much for linking up at #fortheloveofBLOG. Claire x
