We were recently invited to Down Hall Hotel to review their three course Sunday lunch Menu and the new terrace. Down Hall is set in an area of outstanding beauty; surrounded by 110 acres of Hertfordshire Park land and woodland. As we drove through the gates and up the long sweeping drive that houses a lake, trees & wildlife we realised that we had arrived somewhere very private, very relaxing and very special. At the top of the sweeping driveway we were greeted by a grand & impressive historical mansion. The building itself dates back 1322 and and its use as Hatfield Broad Oak Priory. In 1540 it was sold by Henry VIII to Williams Glastock who was responsible for giving the house its Tudor appearance. Since then it has a variety of owners and uses; including being used as a school! There are some really informative little booklets in the reception area with a full detailed description of the history of Down Hall; we both really enjoyed reading and digesting it and feeling the history that surrounded us. Down Hall provides a hotel experience like no other.
We headed straight for the restaurant and we’re greeted by very polite staff who showed us to our table, gave us the menu and some time to have a think about what we wanted to order.
Lily ordered from the Kids Menu and had Tomato Soup to start, Chicken Nuggets and Chips for Main and Chocolate Brownie and Ice Cream for dessert. Lily enjoyed all three courses, however I was slightly disappointed that the kids menu contained no veg option just meat and carb; it would have been nice to at least have some beans or peas on there (Lily wasn’t bothered by this at all, but as a parent I like to try and give her at least one veg option with her main meal).
I chose French Onion Soup to Start followed by Roast Beef; which came with all the trimmings – Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Potatoes, Gravy, Mange Tout, Broccoli and Carrot. My meal was delicious and the meat was literally melt in the mouth. For dessert I chose the Chocolate Brownie off the Kids Menu and the staff were happy to do that for me.
Mike had a selection of anti pasti and olives to start which he really enjoyed. Mike had Chicken for his main meal which was served with Mashed Potato, Cabbage and Gravy. Mike really enjoyed the Chicken dinner and said it was very light, just what he wanted. Mike had the Cheese Board for Dessert.
The restaurant staff were all extremely friendly and very attentive during our meal and the food itself was top notch.
After our meal we decided to head outside to see the New Terrace and have a walk to the newly installed play area. The Terrace is fab and it’s the perfect spot to sit and eat or sit and have a drink on a Summers evening.
Lily loved the area and I was very impressed with it too. There were lots of slides a swings and the play area was much bigger than I was expecting. Everything was brand new and in pristine condition.
We had a lovely Sunday afternoon at Down Hall as I am sure you can see from our video. We will definitely be back soon!
